DBWOODCRAFT
Hello and welcome to my website.
My name is Derek Bailey.
Based in Co. Louth I am surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, folklore, history and architecture all of which play a big part in my inspiration.
From a very early age I have had an interest in drawing, sketching and painting.
From doodling on my school books to portrait drawing, still-life sketches and other projects I have found that natural progression has been the key for me in relation to my woodcraft.
My Grandfather in his day was a teacher of Art and Wood Carving so it was almost inevitable for me to follow in his footsteps.
In fact, I can still remember the smell of the wood carvings and the oils and varnishes my Grandfather had in his converted attic when, as children, we used to visit on holidays.
I remember especially the Stations of the Cross carvings that he worked on for some churches in Cork City.
I think part of my natural progression took place on holidays in my Grandparents house!
Being self taught in the carving element of my work and also in woodturning I have learned some things the slow and hard way but nonetheless I have learned them . . . and I will always continue to learn new things.
DBWOODCRAFT
concentrates on finding the natural beauty hidden within every piece of wood and bringing it to the surface in varied forms such as functional items and sculptural pieces of wooden art.
Rather than having a particular piece in mind my work tends to evolve organically.
As I am inspired by all that mother nature has to offer I often translate this into my work by keeping the lines fluid and clean trying to capture the elements of movement.
